Sheikra (SHAY-kra) was born Juji Kali Nanyanika (nah-YAHM-kah) on May 19, 1988 in Dakar, Senegal into a very diplomatic family. Her father, Léopold Abdou Nanyanika worked as a foreign diplomat to France while her French mother Aimée-Helene (Ah-MAY Elle- EN) stayed home in Dakar with Juji and later her younger brother Atu Manu. Juji was a strong willed child who insisted on taking to the streets at a very young age and running with the street gangs of the capital city.

Her two favorite people to visit were the mysterious medicine woman who traveled from city to city performed the old arts and her father’s friend Ajani Chiamaka Belay. The woman never gave a name aside from Maman (mother) but came twice a year and stayed exactly one month before heading out again. Juji made a point to visit her every day that she was in Dakar, staying all afternoon sometimes. She especially liked Maman’s pet Sheikra, a bird of prey from the region. Whenever Juji came to visit, the Sheikra left his perch by the window to land snuggly on her shoulder.

Ajani was a Senegalese diplomat to the United States who returned every so often to Dakar and made a point to check in on Juji and her family, especially when Juji’s father was away in Paris. Juji greatly enjoyed his visits, especially when they coincided with Maman’s time in Dakar. At such times, Juji spent every day in the company of at least one of these grown up friends.

Juji returned one evening in December 1999 from visiting Maman to find a deserted house. Aimée-Helene and Atu Manu seemed to have simply disappeared with no note as to where or why and no evidence of having taken anything with them. Only a slight blood smear by the door frame indicated that their departure may have been forced. Ajani cared for Juji until her father could return from Paris a week later. The Dakar police investigated and ruled that Juji’s mother must have left on her own accord, taking Atu with her. They found no evidence that Casamancian rebels were involved though they could not explain the blood smear and finally dismissed it as Aimée-Helene injuring herself in her hurry to leave.

Shortly after her mother and brother’s disappearance, the Grays ship crashed in to Washington DC. Although normally on good terms with the United States, the current president of Senegal, Abdou Diouf, opposed the American decision to welcome the Grays. His views, however, were not shared by the Senegalese people and in the 2000 elections; he was beaten by his opponent Abdoulaye Wade. Wade supported the United States and was very eager to increase his own diplomatic influence in the Gray situation.

Ajani convinced Juji’s father that the two of them might benefit from this new opportunity. With Ajani’s help, Léopold and Juji were transferred almost instantly to Washington DC. Léopold adamantly supported a union with the Grays and quickly joined on the team working with the Aliens and their Nords. He served as Senegal’s liaison with the project. Juji worked closely with him at home and sometimes even at the office. Though the Super War that broke out pitted countries against each other and strained the human relationship with the Grays, Juji’s father continued his tireless efforts to keep up diplomatic relations with the aliens.

When the Grey’s suddenly left in their Exodus in 2004, Léopold feared that he and Juji would be sent back to Senegal. He began spending more time at the office, trying to uncover the reason for the mysterious disappearance of the Grays. One day in 2005, Léopold called Juji at home excited and exclaimed that he had found something of great importance. He felt it was too dangerous to discuss over the phone and promised to tell her when he got home. Though Juji waited up until well past midnight, her father never returned. Finally at 1 a.m., there was a knock at the door. The FBI was waiting at the doorstep with the news that her father was dead. Someone had placed a car bomb in his car which detonated the moment he closed the door. They had no answers for her and leads were not immediately forthcoming.

Devastated by this newest personal tragedy and not trusting the police after her last experience with their investigative skills, Juji abandoned her life as she knew it and took to the streets, using the skills she learned in Dakar. She took the street name Sheikra to remind herself of her home and those she has lost through the years. She dedicated herself to making connections so that she could learn as much as possible about her father’s death and those responsible.

After the Cosmic Wave hit, Juji began showing signs of superhuman strength and healing abilities. All her powers did not come to light, however, until October 20, 2005. On that day, she was involved in a horrific accident on the Baltimore beltway when a petrol truck lost control, striking an SUV containing a mother and two children and causing the SUV to slam into Juji’s motorcycle. Though the accident mangled all the vehicles involved and instantly killed the mother and one of the children, Juji escaped the accident barely injured. In fact, her wounds seemed to be healing on their own while she picked herself off the pavement and pulled the top of the SUV off to free the surviving child. Unfortunately, within minutes the petrol spilled on the street caught fire and Juji had mere seconds to jump into the air carrying the young girl as a fireball exploded all around her. She felt the heat growing fainter and upon opening up her eyes to investigate why, she noticed that she was high up in the air with everyone below in too much of a panic to notice. She flew the child to John’s Hopkins Hospital Emergency room but hurried away before anyone could interrogate her.

Since she had cut off contact with much of the world accept for the underground, she was able to successfully hide her identity from the police looking into the accident. She hid underground with her new contacts until she mysteriously received a letter from her old friend Ajani, which led her to the First National Bank of Baltimore.
